Annual Awards

Every year at the conference there are a several different awards that can be given out for Water and Wastewater Operators and others who have performed at an extraordinary level.

Award & Descriptions

Darcey Award:

Established in  1961 in honor of H.J. Darcey, State Sanitary Engineer, this award is given to the wastewater operator of the year.

Stapley Award:

Established in 1961 in honor of Edward Stapley who as an educator at Oklahoma Agricultural & Mechanical College (now Oklahoma State University) was deeply involved in educating operators, this award is given to the water operator of the year.

Plant Awards:

Established in 1972 to recognize outstanding water and wastewater plants. There are two water plant awards and two wastewater plant awards given. One award in each category is given to a plant serving less than 10,000 population and one to a plant serving more than 10,000
Note: now there are 3 categories Small plant, Medium plant, and Large plant.

Gimmicks and Gadgets Awards:

This award is for the best gimmick and gadget submitted; such as models, pictures, descriptions, etc. of devices and aids that were developed to make an operator’s job easier, safer, more efficient, less costly, etc.
Note: have not seen this one given out in many years, let’s try and bring it back by sending in nominations.

President’s Award:

This award was established in 1975 by the president of the OWPCA. Its purpose is to honor one member who has over the years given outstanding service to the  profession. Selection of the recipient is entirely up to the president.
Note: This honor will be chosen by the OWPCC Advisory Committee.

Jessie Vaughn Award (Previously known as the Instructor of the Year Award):

Name in honor of Jessie Vaughn, who started out at the Oklahoma City-County Health Department, later moving to the Rural Water District and was a driving force behind the OWPCC, putting on training programs all over the state. This award is given to an instructor in the field of water and/or wastewater who has demonstrated the ability to give high quality training to operators as well as expanding the training program along the way.
